Madman Moment

Bush says "Leaving Iraq would be a disaster". As opposed to what we have now?

As opposed to a post-Soviet Afghanistan, which is what we would have if left now. And that's worse for us.

We shouldn't have gone in there to begin with, and poor planning on the part of the administration caused all sort of problems to begin with.

In a rather prescient statement, I believe Colin Powell described the "Pottery Barn" effect before the war. You break it, you bought it.

Sadam may have been evil, but he was one of the few secular leaders in the mid-east. And he was no friend of Osama.

Now, though, we can't leave until the Iraqui government is viable. If we bolt, the current low level civil war will boil over and we'll have another Afghanistan which will be terrible for the people of Iraq and for the world.
